The Society’s Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, November 24 at 2 p.m. in the Newburgh Heritage Center at 123 Grand Street, across from the Newburgh Free Library. Board officers will relate the activities of the past program year and the Society’s plans for 2025.
In anticipation of a 2025 program and exhibit entitled “Unbuilt Newburgh,” HSNBH archivists have been seeking and sorting information on the many local redevelopment initiatives that never came to pass in the second half of the twentieth century. One discovery was a short film of national developer William Zeckendorf and Mayor George McKneally describing the transformative plan for a jetport connected to high speed/high tech rail into New York City and a giant container seaport on the Newburgh city waterfront where buildings were being removed for “urban renewal.” The film of mostly aerial footage of greater Newburgh in the 1960’s will be presented to the Society’s membership after a brief business meeting held to revise by-laws and elect officers.
