From his Newburgh and Cold Spring offices, George E. Harney rose after the Civil War to attend the progress of medieval-influenced architecture. SUNY New Paltz undergraduate independent researcher Steven Baltsas will share a new study on HArney, seend as a successor to A.J. Downing. Examining country house commissions in New Windsor and Balmville, this presentation will explore the meaning behind Harney's creative process and aspects of his estate planning. His friendships with Frederick Clarke Withers and William Hilton, a master builder responsible for both architects' projects, also reveal the state of design, labor and imagination in the newly-chartered City of Newburgh.
