<image:title>Events - An Afternoon of Poetry with Newburgh Poet Laureate Genie Abrams - This event will be at the Crawford House, 189 Montgomery Street, Newburgh, NY.</image:title>
<image:caption>As National Poetry Month begins, so does the two-year tenure of Newburgh’s new Poet Laureate, Genie Abrams. Her role, as was her predecessors’, will be to promote the importance of poetry in the community by sharing a wide variety of poems in as many settings as possible. Crawford House will be one of the first such places when Ms. Abrams entertains and enriches an audience on Sunday, April 23rd at 2 p.m. With the almost 200 year-old Montgomery Street home as a setting, Genie will read from collections of poetry maintained in the Historical Society’s archives. Reading aloud together was a common entertainment in the 19th century as family and neighbors visited and shared new literature that they discovered. On April 23rd, the audience may recognize lines from famous 19th-century poets they studied in school as well as hear verses from local writers they don’t know but may want to investigate. A few of Genie’s own poems will round out the recital. A Newburgh native with a long career in journalism and public relations, Ms. Abrams has been active in serving her hometown on several boards and committees including a term on the Newburgh City Council.</image:caption>

<image:title>Industry & Transportation - Algonquin Park Historic Photos</image:title>
<image:caption>Many grew up playing ball, picnicking, walking the dog, and just hanging out in what has been known to current generations as Algonquin Park. Years ago many even swam in the streams and snacked on barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers and spent hot summer days in the cool shade of the many trees lining the trails. Today it is still used for much the same purpose and provides an escape for those living in the city and town alike. Named in recognition of its historic Native American connections by Colonel Frederic Delano in 1934 when he gifted the property to the City of Newburgh, the site operated in various forms producing black powder from 1815 to 1901. Chosen because of the steady source of water offer by the Quassaick Creek, black powder was instrumental in the construction of roads, canals and railways, farming and land clearing, hunting, mining, and many other uses both in the United States and overseas. Orange County acquired the Park from the financially burdened City of Newburgh in 1978. The County continues to maintain the park. Additional funds are being sought to help preserve the buildings within the park. This guided walk is just one of the efforts to help raise awareness to the historic events that occurred right here.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In production from 1815 until 1901, the powder mill ranks as one of the more successful enterprises to have operated in this area. From its humble beginning in 1815 when black powder was produced on a small scale, the plant was expanded and improved until its peak year, 1894, when nearly two million pounds of gunpowder were produced.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As an industrial complex for the manufacture of black powder throughout most of the nineteenth century, Orange Mills in Newburgh was designed to withstand destruction by accidental explosion. Workers in the wooded acres along Powder Mill Road carefully combined volatile ingredients that were refined into gunpowder which they packed and shipped around the country. Machinery, powered by the Quassaick Creek that winds through the property, was carefully operated from a slight distance. Wood and copper tools were used to avoid unwanted sparks, and stone structures were built with thick walls intended to redirect explosive forces. Accidents were unavoidable and the mill survived twenty explosions over the course of its operation. Many of those explosions were heard and felt miles away. Now, over a century since it closed, Orange Mills is being reclaimed by nature.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The average work day at the mill was ten hours long and involving twenty-five to forty hands taking part in many processes. Transporting materials on site was one of those processes. Trolley rails were set throughout the mill and materials were wheeled from building to building swiftly and efficiently.</image:caption>

<image:title>Industry & Transportation - The Once-Crowded Waterfront - Dozens of steamboats came and went at the Newburgh docks. The Hudson River Dayline, Inc. owned many like the Hendrick Hudson and Robert Fulton and Alexander Hamilton. Other local companies owned smaller vessels. The Benjamin B. Odell is shown here at Newburgh with its decks equally crowded. Named after a New York State Governor from Newburgh, the Odell was a popular boat for daytrips. Coming and going in all sizes, steamboats (some made in Newburgh and many with their engine parts made here) came and went carrying both people and products. Once, the boat traffic was matched by equal rail traffic in downtown Newburgh. An electric trolley system had a terminus on Front Street so that people could disembark from a boat or train and continue through the city to their destination. Newburgh had three railroad terminals to accept passengers or freight. One of those terminals is left standing as the The Pizza Shop on South Water Street. It is the former New York Central and West Shore Railroad Terminal and served hundreds of people daily. Passenger service ended to Newburgh in 1958 and the poor terminal sat forlornly until converted in 2009, its 100th birthday. On the next busy evening along Front Street, when you may crave a place to just watch the water roll by, imagine the far bigger crowds that filled that horizon a century ago.</image:title>
